Interning with Annie

Author: CAMPUS

We caught up with Annie, Campus Ambassador and Summer intern in LA to find out how things compare.

Hi Annie, what are you studying and where?

Hi, I’m Annie and I am a rising 4th year student at UCLA, and I study Sociology. Sociology is a discipline that’s centered around how people interact with other people, groups of people, and institutions.

What are your favorite things to do in LA?

My favorite things to do in LA are going to the beach, eating out at restaurants/food spots, and going thrifting. I think I am a true California girl because I love the beach and being in the sun.

Tell us about your roles at Campus – you’ve been both an ambassador and an intern recruiting ambassadors, right?

Yes, Spring of 2023, I was a FROG student brand ambassador, so I was helping promote the app on campus and helping host events that were sponsored by FROG. Shortly after the FROG ambassadorship ended, my campaign manager during the FROG ambassadorship reached out to me about this summer opportunity to help recruit for this new student brand ambassadorship kicking off in Fall 2023! At Campus, I started off as a FROG student brand ambassador that was recruited by Campus and now, I am a summer recruitment intern for Campus so I’m experiencing a really cool full circle this summer because I went from being recruited to being the one recruiting!

What was the coolest part about promoting Frog App at UCLA?

The coolest part about promoting FROG app was definitely the autonomy I had with hosting my events. As a Brand ambassador, I was allotted a budget to host events with to promote the app. Instead of giving away merchandise and company branded products like brand ambassadors traditionally do, I was able to give away Yerba mate drinks and snacks, items that were enticing to college students and would incentivize them to download the app. I was also able to collaborate with UCLA REACH(a club on campus connecting students with the entertainment industry) to sponsor a Paint and Sip event for Mental Health Awareness month. Having the autonomy to decide how I wanted my events to be hosted, allowed for students to have more unique and personable first interactions with the app.

How’s recruiting for Charles and Keith different after being an ambassador yourself?

Recruiting for Charles and Keith is much different than being an ambassador because I’m helping with all the backend processes it takes to execute a brand ambassador program. I’ve been scouting out creators, making the training deck, reviewing applicants, and even interviewing the applicants. I’m doing all sorts of tasks I didn’t even think about when I was being a brand ambassador. Recruiting is a lengthy process and there’s a lot of back and forth that goes on between the agency and the applicant as well as the agency and the client. Though it is hard work, it has been extremely rewarding having gained so much insight into recruiting and creating an out of house brand ambassador program for Charles and Keith.

What do gen z students really care about when it comes to the brands they love?

Gen Z students really care about 2 things: Brand aesthetic and inclusivity. How visually pleasing a product looks and how companies present themselves online on their social media platforms are very significant factors when it comes to appealing to Gen Z because Gen Z loves when products have clean fonts, simple colors, and when brands have beautifully curated social media pages. Additionally, Gen Z also wants to see diversity from the brands they love. By diversity, I mean different body types, different skin types, and people with different skin colors. Simply put, Gen Z wants to see models that look like them and consumers that look like them.

Got any tips for someone wanting to be a brand ambassador?

My biggest tip is to keep your social media pages looking visually pleasing and put your email in your bio! The first impression that brands and agencies will get from you will likely be from your social media pages. Working as a recruiting intern myself now, I can confidently say that a visually pleasing Instagram/Tiktok page makes a big difference as to how recruiters view your profile. So, keep your Instagram highlights updated with your recent stories, take photos with good lighting, and keep a professional email in your bio so people know where to reach you!
