Why You Should become a Student Ambassador

Author: Nelly McGough

With the rising cost of living outstripping what UK maintenance loans can offer, it’s no wonder that university students are often short on cash. It can prove challenging, however, to find a flexible part-time job that you can balance alongside your studies, without having to sacrifice revision, extra-curricular activities, and socialising.

Many students may not have considered Brand Ambassador work before, as such roles are often not available to sixth formers. At Campus Group, we know that Brand Ambassador roles are not only a great way for our clients to tap into the student market, they’re also a fantastic way for students to earn some extra cash and develop their professional skills – and here’s why.

Transferable skills

Brand Ambassador roles are very varied and you can pick up a wealth of skills that you potentially wouldn’t have otherwise in traditional part-time jobs such as hospitality and retail. For example, event work is fantastic for developing your confidence as you’ll be working in a fast-paced environment and talking to potentially hundreds of other students over the course of the day. Of course, a lot of Brand Ambassador roles also involve social media content creation, so you can flex your creative muscles, get a better understanding of your audience, and gain valuable experience in working to a client brief. As Student Brand Ambassador, you’ll have a keen insider knowledge of the current student landscape in the UK, and brands will often be receptive to your ideas for promotion strategies and content. Future employers always want to know how you’ve gone above and beyond in previous roles, and Brand Ambassador positions will usually offer you a lot of creative freedom so you can really show off your skills and potential.

Flexible hours

Every campaign is different, but Brand Ambassador roles typically have very flexible hours, with either occasional shifts for event work, ad hoc sampling or flyering activities that you can organize around your university timetable, or social media content creation, which can be done entirely as and when you can!

If you’ve had to organize to head to campus with your fellow SBAs to conduct product sampling or produce weekly social media content to hit targets, you’ll be demonstrating to future employers that you can be trusted to work independently and manage your time efficiently.

Opens the door to new opportunities

Often if you’ve worked as a Brand Ambassador for an agency before, you’ll be their first port of call for any future campaigns you’re eligible for. It certainly takes the stress out of job-hunting if you have employers approaching you, rather than the other way around! This is also an excellent way to quickly build up an impressive list of brands that you can name as previous work experience.

CV Enhancer

All that’s to say, you’ll have a fantastic CV by the time you leave university if you’ve picked up some Brand Ambassador roles along the way. It’s a fantastic way to develop your confidence, improve your communication skills, harness your creative streak, and get some industry-leading names on your CV – giving you the edge when you’re applying for your first graduate role.
